Learning to Live, Living to learn

Rivers

On the 9th June Bowden took a trip to Dartmoor to study rivers. First we looked at the ruins of ancient settlements. Further on we discussed how the water had eroded the hills to make valleys. On our way to the river Abi found a small lizard.

When we got to the river we learnt how to measure the speed (velocity) it was flowing at, we discovered that the east-Bovey river flows on average three seconds per meter. We also measured the depth of the water in different areas of the river. After we had measured the water at site one we set off again down river to measure at another site. We found out that at the source of the river it was shallower and faster flowing than further down.

After lunch we went downriver a bit we had to walk past a swamp, Orlando, our instructor told us that the plant life in boggy ground is so delicate it could take up to seven years to repair itself if people walk on it.

We learnt a lot and had a fun day, the weather was great and standing in the river cooled us off.
