The Phaistos Disk

Some of the children in Bowden have been working with Ruth finding out about the Phaistos disc and discussing what they think the symbols might be. Below are some of their findings and their thoughts:

Guy Oldrieve

"The phaistos disk was discovered in Crete 1908.

I have been looking at the symbols and I think that each symbol means one word and each block means one sentence and each side means one story.

I think that some of the symbols mean bottle, rose, hand, and river."

Jack Sanderson

"It was found in Crete

it was made out of clay

it is about sixteen cm

in diameter and one cm

thick .

We looked at the symbols

I think some of them

are skins / helmets / people/

temples and a pot ."

Poppy Wood

"We?ve been looking at the Phaistos Disk. It?s a clay disk with symbols on. When we were looking at it we had to try and guess what some of the symbols were. I thought some looked like a pot/urn, strawberry, orange, grave, water/river, fish, dolphin,

temple, flower, hand, scales and an axe."

Leanna Coates

"We have been looking at the Phaistos Disk we know that it is made out of clay. But we have been trying to find out what the markings mean. We think some of the markings look like animals and some of them are fruit. Some might be things that live in Greece. They might be parts of a human body."
